Hunting at Arapaho NWR

Hunters can pursue big game, waterfowl, upland birds, migratory birds, and small game here, subject to state seasons and refuge-specific rules. Fishing is available — freshwater fishing. A refuge permit is required for at least some activities, in addition to your state license. Special youth hunting opportunities are offered.

Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge was established to help offset the loss of wetlands throughout the prairies of the Midwest and today provides important habitat for waterfowl in Colorado.

Fishing at Arapaho NWR

The refuge offers fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout. The Illinois River is the only area on the refuge open to fishing. The refuge is closed to fishing June 1-July 31 to reduce impact on nesting birds.

State fishing licenses and regulations apply. Some waters close seasonally to protect wildlife.
