🏙️ Refuge Hunting Near Major U.S. Cities: 30 Metro Areas

Most hunters don't have a free week to drive to North Dakota. The good news is that National Wildlife Refuges are scattered across the country — many sit within an hour or two of a major city, often on river bottoms, coastal marshes and reservoirs that hold birds and deer surprisingly close to town.

For each of 30 large U.S. metro areas, the list below shows the refuges and wetland management districts that (1) list at least one hunting opportunity and (2) have at least one hunt unit open in the 2026–2027 USFWS data, within 75 straight-line miles of downtown — usually a 90-minute drive or less. Distances are measured from the city center to each refuge's USFWS reference point, so your actual drive will vary.

How to use this list

• Start with the closest refuge and open its page: you'll find a hunt-unit map, which units are open or closed, permit requirements and the species allowed.
• Check permits early. Refuges near big cities are more likely to use quota or lottery hunts because demand is high. Application windows can close months before the season.
• Expect pressure on opening days and weekends. Weekday hunts, late seasons and walk-in units far from parking lots are your friends.
• Look for WPAs if you live in the upper Midwest — the count of Waterfowl Production Areas within 75 miles is shown for each metro.

Method and caveats

Distances are great-circle (“as the crow flies”) miles from approximate city-center coordinates to each refuge's USFWS reference point, which is often the headquarters or main entrance. Large refuges can extend far from that point, so the nearest huntable unit may be closer or farther. A refuge is included if USFWS lists any hunting opportunity for it and at least one of its 2026–2027 hunt units is open or open with special regulations. Always confirm current rules with the refuge.
